Amari's African village is invaded by slavers and her family is murdered. Amari experiences awful conditions as she is shipped to America, eventually ending up at a plantation in colonial South Carolina. It is at the plantation where Amari meets Polly, an indentured servant. Together with another slave's young son, they escape to a safe Spanish colony.
